Bicycle, Pedestrian and Greenway Planning

The Piedmont Triad Council of Governments provides bicycle, pedestrian and greenways planning services through our local technical assistance program and rural transportation planning organization services.

Why promote a walking or bicycling-friendly community?

  • Walking is a part of every trip and is the most accessible form of transportation for people of all ages

  • Walking and bicycling-friendly communities promote social interaction and physical fitness
  • Walking and bicycling-friendly communities experience diminished crime and other social problems
  • Walking and bicycling-friendly communities have reduced dependence on the automobile as a form of transportation

Sidewalk Inventory Full Report

A sidewalk inventory for all the municipalities in the Piedmont Triad RPO region was completed in 2007 and includes sidewalk distance, condition and curb ramps.  Sidewalk data will enable communities to be more competitive in obtaining bicycle and pedestrian grants.  Many communities in the Triad have already been successful in this regard.

Inventory Project History

For decades after the 1960s, transportation routes were built to accommodate auto-oriented development. In 1995 NCDOT made bicycling and walking elements an integral part of their Statewide Transportation Plan. Following the lead of NCDOT, regional Comprehensive Transportation Plans must now consider alternative modes of transportation. Community sidewalk inventories like the one conducted by the Piedmont Triad RPO makes invaluable pedestrian data available to planners at all levels.
